#VoicesofJAF – December 14th – The Desserichs
December 14, 2015 by Kat Krieger
“We’re not just another cancer charity. There are plenty of those already. What we are is the belief that if we focus on those certain types of cancers and we listen to our experts, that we’re going to fundamentally change that battle, so that 80 years from now, we are not sitting around saying, ‘why haven’t we cured cancer?'” -Keith Desserich
At the age of 5, Brooke & Keith Desserich’s daughter Elena was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer, DIPG. Elena lost her voice, so she started hiding notes of love around her house, which her parents would find after her passing. The Desserich’s published a journal of their journey during the last months of Elena’s life in a book titled Notes Left Behind and then founded The Cure Starts Now Foundation. The Foundation seeks to fund cures for pediatric brain cancers. Notes Left Behind has become a run-away international bestseller. The Foundation has chapters in 26 states and 2 countries and raised more than $5 million.
Help us share more stories like the Desserichs to fundamentally help them change the cancer battle.
